"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."

wiggy weather

The weather down here has been schizophrenic lately. We've had enough days in the 20s or below that 33 degrees is actually quite pleasant to me. Which made the 65 degree weather last week absolutely sweltering. Enough that Midas presented himself, head over the gate, waiting for me to come relieve his hot itchyness.

If you look closely you can see that he is caked, stem to stern, in dry crusty mud. I scrubbed the dry mud off outside rather than have to sweep the barn!
Three days later it was 20 degrees and there were 2 inches of snow on the ground (whipped off the road by relentless winds).

I love this variety in my weather. Keeps me from getting bored, or from having days and days without sunshine. The mud I could do without...

  1. Aww Midas is so cute! Poor thing! I always want to scrub all the dirty horses down at the farm I ride at - thankfully the guy I ride is really crazy about keeping himself clean!

Do you still ride in the cold weather? I've stopped the last few weeks just because it's sooo cold!

  2. I do still ride! The mud is horrific so we can't do much more than walk for fear of wiping out ingloriously. The horses get soo bored without work that I try to get out once or twice a week.

On the really cold days I skip the saddle so I can sit directly on a toasty horse. Also...I chicken out of going at all when it drops below 20. I used to ride consistently in that weather, but I was paid to, and that overcame the "but it's warm inside!" argument.
